Money Circle: How to Make a Budget

Money Circle.png

Having a working budget is key to being financially stable. You have to know what is going in and out each month. But creating a budget and sticking to it is not exactly straightforward or easy. Many people simply don't know where to start, and need a little bit of guidance. I want to help you figure out how to make a budget that works for you! So come to Money Circle and together we'll map out budgets that we'll actually stick to.

Bring a list of your expenses and income. It will also be helpful if you have an average of how much you typically spend outside of bills each month. Bonus points: look up the dates that most of your bills are due.

Ladies Make It Rain: How to Save and Invest Like a Boss

make money.jpeg

Whether we like it or not, money makes the world go round.

And when ladies have control and confidence over their financial lives, they can go out in the world and kick ass. So let’s gather with some soon-to-be-new-friends in a safe space to get our wallets in order.

This workshop combines woo woo practices (like meditating on our current relationship to money) with down and dirty practical advice (like how much to save for retirement).

During our time together, we’ll go through exercises to:

  • Align our money with our values

  • Determine priorities for our spending

  • Build an emergency fund

  • Manage debt

  • Save for retirement

  • Save for big dreams (like travel or a down payment)

  • Understand different investment vehicles

You’ll leave with a concrete action plan for the steps you'll take immediately after the class, a Money Management 101 workbook, and a community of others to support you on the journey.

The Emotional Labor Union: Fathers & Daughters

fathers & daughters.jpg

“These are the things I want for you — to grow up in a world with no limits on your dreams and no achievements beyond your reach, and to grow into compassionate, committed women who will help build that world.” - Barack Obama

The societal structure in which we live is essentially a mass generalization of the father daughter relationship.

Patriarchy: A system of society or government in which the father or eldest male is head of the family and descent is reckoned through the male line.

It almost feels like the idolization of the father figure has yet to be challenged by feminism. I dare you to google "Father daughter relationship" and just take a gander at the first five entries.

That being said father daughter relationships are unique. Dads are seen as kings - someone to be worshipped in popular culture. But I would wager that a lot of us were shaped more by how our fathers let us down than by how they championed us. Whether our relationships with our fathers are good, bad or non-existent, we all have an inextricable connection to our fathers which has shaped us into the women we are today. Let's convene and talk about our relationships with our fathers through a feminist lens.

Vision Board: Time to Set Your Goal!

Vision Board Time to Set Your Goal!.jpg

Dream it, believe it, do it!

Some people have a fleeting idea of what they want to do, be, or have in thier life. Yet, it often remains just that - fleeting.

When was the last time you gave yourself the gift of a day just for you, just for your visioning process? Spend time at the Femme Fatale DC Pop up getting more clear about what you want, recognizing the old beliefs and self-imposed limitations that have kept you stuck, make friends with those out-dated beliefs and create your own calibrated written vision that then turns into a beautiful visual representation of that vision that you will use to dream it into existence.

Lets create an intentional life.

The Emotional Labor Union: Gender Pay Gap

the gender pay gap.jpg

Fact: Women with graduate and undergraduate degrees represent about 50% of the workforce

Fact: Women are often the sole or co-breadwinner in 40% of American families with children

Fact: Women outpace men in educational achievement

Fact: Women control the majority of household spending

Fact: Despite the above accomplishments, for every $1 a man earns, the gender wage breaks down to:

  • $.87 = Asian-American Women

  • $.79 = Caucasian Women

  • $.63 = African-American/Black Women

  • $.57 = Native American Women

  • $.54 = Latina Women

The wage gap has stagnated since 2007 and, on average, the gap in earnings translates to about $10,086 each year, leaving women and their families shortchanged and stressed out. While the enforcement of the Equal Pay Act, civil rights laws, and access to reproductive health care have helped chip away at the wage gap, it’s essential that we continue to demand equal pay for equal work.

Let's Talk About... Failure

Let's Talk About... Failure.jpg

We've all heard the inspiring stories of entrepreneurship - 20-something millionaires, hockey stick growth, overnight success, building an empire. The story has been told so many times, we feel like we already know it.

This event is not about ANY of that.

Let's talk about failure. Let's talk about what happens when things go wrong. Let's talk about the great ideas that flop. Let's get together and talk about the real, hard struggles of our entrepreneurship, side hustles, career trajectories, and the paths that didn't take us where we thought they would.

Join us for an honest panel discussion and networking event on failure on Thursday, April 12th, 6-8pm. We're going to get real about what happens when we fail.

You won't want to miss it! Panelists will be announced soon.

Money Circle: How Taxes Fit Into Your Financial Goals

Freaking out about tax season? I'm sure you're not alone! Taxes can feel confusing and overwhelming. Plus, many of us never really learned much about them. That's why I want to create a space where you can ask questions and talk about how taxes fit into the bigger picture of our lives.

We'll be joined by Cady North, the founder and CEO of North Financial Advisors. She will talk about how taxes fit into your overarching financial goals, and answer your questions.

See you there?

--

Money Circle is a safe open space where women can ask questions, air their fears, brag about accomplishments, and be honest about any confusion they may have around money.

Light snacks and wine will be provided.
