Using Video Like a Pro to Grow Your Brand or Business

Using Video Like a Pro to Grow Your Brand or Business.jpg

Did you know that video can skyrocket your site traffic and that audiences are 10x more likely to engage with, embed, and share video content? Oh...and side note...it's hands down the most effective form of marketing available to us today!

Making videos can be incredibly fun and insanely effective, but at the start, it can also be unbelievable overwhelming. Which social media platforms should you be using? What kind of video actually converts? How long should your videos be? Not to mention that little complication...how the heck do you actually make professional video that looks amazing?!

Since video is NOT a one size fits all solution, the ‘right’ kind of content for you could be one of many options, depending on the type of business you own. Let us help set you up for success!

In this 90-minute workshop, we'll teach you how master the art of short and engaging video for your website, blog and/or social channels.

Inviting & Receiving Feedback for Leaders

leaders feedback.jpeg

The last time you received feedback, how did it feel? Frustrating? Unhelpful? Unconstructive?

Would you like the next time to be different?

We talk a lot about how important feedback is to our work and relationships, but we also need to take time to practice and integrate better feedback skills into our work. This workshop is a place to learn how to invite the feedback you need in the way that feels best for you. We will also practice how to receive feedback with grace, and model ways to redirect or ask for clarity when you get it.

By learning how to model inviting and receiving feedback, leaders can gain the feedback they need to grow as leaders, and to lead the growth of their teams, organizations, and businesses.

Female Entrepreneur Roadmap: Creating a Tech-enabled Business as a Non-tech...

Female Entrepreneur Roadmap Creating a Tech-enabled Business as a Non-tech....jpg

Having a background in tech (coding, computer science, data analytics) should not determine whether or not a female founder can create a tech or tech-enabled company. It can often be an intimidating process transitioning from idea-stage to creating a viable prototype to reach your first customers.

This roadmap will empower female entrepreneurs to identify DC resources to create a tech product and navigate the entrepreneurship landscape as a non-technical founder.

The goal of this roundtable is to learn major areas of concern for women that want to create a tech business but are unsure of where to start, and to provide them with insights into navigating challenges utilizing the roadmap.

The Emotional Labor Union: Fathers & Daughters

fathers & daughters.jpg

“These are the things I want for you — to grow up in a world with no limits on your dreams and no achievements beyond your reach, and to grow into compassionate, committed women who will help build that world.” - Barack Obama

The societal structure in which we live is essentially a mass generalization of the father daughter relationship.

Patriarchy: A system of society or government in which the father or eldest male is head of the family and descent is reckoned through the male line.

It almost feels like the idolization of the father figure has yet to be challenged by feminism. I dare you to google "Father daughter relationship" and just take a gander at the first five entries.

That being said father daughter relationships are unique. Dads are seen as kings - someone to be worshipped in popular culture. But I would wager that a lot of us were shaped more by how our fathers let us down than by how they championed us. Whether our relationships with our fathers are good, bad or non-existent, we all have an inextricable connection to our fathers which has shaped us into the women we are today. Let's convene and talk about our relationships with our fathers through a feminist lens.

Navigating Passive-Aggressiveness and Defensiveness

fist-blow-power-wrestling-163431.jpeg

How do you feel when you experience passive-aggressive behavior? Frustrated and confused?
Or when someone says "Don't be so defensive!"?

Do you, like me, ask - What does that even mean? What is happening here? And how can I change it?

We see this behavior pop up and derail communication and constrain growth. But in order to change how we navigate these reactions, we need to understand what is going on. And then practice how we want to do things differently the next time we are dealing with passive-aggressiveness or defensiveness.

State of Innovation: From the Bottom to Now We're Here

State of Innovation From the Bottom to Now We're Here.jpg

The State of Innovation (SOI) is an ongoing event series focused on the people, businesses, trends, and topics that are shaping the city's tech community and economy. Throughout the year, we host several niche SOI meetups that are designed to spotlight an individual category, company, or theme.

At our May State of Innovation meetup, we'll dive into growing and scaling startups. Every entrepreneur is focused on growth, on getting their startup from 0 to 100. And because so much time, energy and resources go into that pursuit of getting off the ground, it can be difficult to sometimes look beyond that intial success to sustaining growth. How do you leverage, manage, and navigate that initial burst of growth to get to 65 and then to 70 and then to 90 and so on and so on?

The Emotional Labor Union: Gender Pay Gap

the gender pay gap.jpg

Fact: Women with graduate and undergraduate degrees represent about 50% of the workforce

Fact: Women are often the sole or co-breadwinner in 40% of American families with children

Fact: Women outpace men in educational achievement

Fact: Women control the majority of household spending

Fact: Despite the above accomplishments, for every $1 a man earns, the gender wage breaks down to:

  • $.87 = Asian-American Women

  • $.79 = Caucasian Women

  • $.63 = African-American/Black Women

  • $.57 = Native American Women

  • $.54 = Latina Women

The wage gap has stagnated since 2007 and, on average, the gap in earnings translates to about $10,086 each year, leaving women and their families shortchanged and stressed out. While the enforcement of the Equal Pay Act, civil rights laws, and access to reproductive health care have helped chip away at the wage gap, it’s essential that we continue to demand equal pay for equal work.

Six Degrees Society DC Presents Overcoming Your Fears

overcoming your fears.jpeg

We live in a world where it's easier to craft the image of a great life than it is to actually build one. The reality is that no one’s perfect, and we all have fears.

Six Degrees Society DC is partnering with Mission Collaborative, a DC-based organization that helps people design careers they love to bring you this workshop. Mission Collaborative offers nights-and-weekends programs for professionals who want to make a career change but need help figuring out what comes next. To build a great career (and life), we have to deal with our fears. We have to be authentic and vulnerable.

wedding.jpeg

If you’re within a certain age range, you probably feel like everyone in the world is getting married at the same time. I hear you! A few years ago, I went to EIGHT weddings in one year. It was insane. And it’s not just the wedding itself. There’s bridal showers, bachelor/bachelorette parties, travel, gifts, etc. Weddings can add up FAST, and not just for the couple tying the knot.

You’re not alone in feeling completely overwhelmed and broke while your friends are getting married. So come to Money Circle to vent, share tips and tricks for how you saved money, and support each other during these busy and expensive parts of life.

DC Freelancers Union SPARK: How Contracts Can Protect Your Work

contract.png

Welcome to Freelancers Union SPARK!

We host meetups for freelancers by freelancers: we invite you to bring your expertise, questions, and elevator pitches to the table to the workshop and discuss.

Join us on the first Wednesday of every month (and on Facebook in between!) to meet other entrepreneurs in the area, get inspired, and talk about stuff like...

MAY'S SPARK:

Contracts are essential for protecting your work as a freelancer. A good contract helps you and your client define the work, set expectations, and avoid misunderstandings. This month's SPARK will offer tips for freelance-friendly contracts, and how to stay protected:

  • Getting paid on time
  • Copyright and ownership
  • Protecting against common pitfalls

And we'll introduce you to the free contract creator you need to put it all in writing.

There will also be time to network with other freelancers who may be able to offer tips you hadn’t considered before.

Regardless of industry, we all share similar experiences as independent business owners! We try to ensure everyone leaves with insights and connections that will help their business thrive.
